Trinamool Building Its Offices Encroaching Govt Land

– Party defies Mamata order, sets up over 20 offices on govt land in Durgapur

Durgapur, March 25: More than 20 Trinamul Congress offices have come up in Durgapur on land owned by the Asansol-Durgapur Development Authority in a year, ignoring Mamata Banerjee’s repeated orders not to set up such establishments on government land.

The offices have come up in several places, including City Centre, Benachity, Durgapur Steel Plant townships and even in the railway station and bus terminus. But the largest office has come up on a seven-cottah ADDA land in Bidhannagar.

Local Trinamul leader Sabyasachi Mukherjee, under whose leadership the Bidhannagar party office was built, did not see anything wrong in setting up the building on a government plot.

“We raised Rs 1 lakh to build the office and develop a small garden and a courtyard. We did not set it up for our personal use. The purpose of the office is to help the residents, who are the strength of our party. I don’t see anything wrong in it,” said Mukherjee.

Asked about defying Mamata’s order, Mukherjee said: “If our party tells me to demolish the office, we will do so.”

Most of the party offices in Durgapur are furnished with LCD television sets, table tennis boards, carom boards, sofa sets and pictures of party chief Mamata Banerjee.

Residents raised questions on the source of such “lavishness”.

“Where do they get the money to buy such costly TV sets? Who have given them electricity connection? We always see local Trinamul supporters playing carom or watching TV at the party offices. I don’t know what party work they are doing,” said a Durgapur Steel Plant employee.

An official of the Durgapur Projects Limited, which supplies power to the town, said the party offices received their electricity supply by hooking.

But the ADDA, which has been demolishing every small encroachment in front of private residences, has turned a blind eye to such illegal occupations by the Trinamul leaders.

A retired steel plant employee at City Centre said the ADDA had demolished a small garden he had made in front of his house.

“The garden was small with flowers and looked nice in front of the house. But the ADDA authorities demolished it along with other similar gardens in the area saying they were encroachments. But they have not taken any step against the Trinamul offices,” he said.

The authority’s chairman and party MLA Tapas Banerjee, who is also the Mayor of Asansol, said he would soon issue orders to pull down all unauthorised structures in the town. “I have told local Trinamul workers and leaders not to set up party offices on ADDA land. I will take steps to demolish them,” he said.

Antara Acharya, the chief executive officer of the authority, also echoed Roy. “I will inquire into the matter. If any encroachment on ADDA land is found, they will be removed.”

Law minister Malay Ghatak, who looks after party affairs in Burdwan district, said encroachment on government land was the culture of the erstwhile Left government. “Our chief minister has categorically said that party offices cannot be built by encroaching upon government land. This was the culture of the CPM. This is not the policy of our party. We will carry out an inquiry and if such offices exist, they will be demolished.”
